Introduction
In Umofia there was no real judicial system in order to determine the punishment for an unlawful action. There was also no official set of laws with which to abide to. These laws and the punishments for breaking them were established by a personal set of beliefs by the Oracle of the village.

If one was accused and proven of committing an unlawful act, they were brought to the Oracle where she would determine their fate.

Punishments
Punishments were usually ones that would involve several acts of hard labor, most of which would be of a benefit for the clan such as gathering outrageous amounts of food, materials, etc. Okonkwo was sentenced to this after beating his wife during the week of peace.

For the most serious of offenses, such as in Okonkwo's case of murder, exile was the punishment. The offender was banished from the clan and forced to live in their Motherland until a predetermined amount of time passes based on the severity of the offense (as judged by the Oracle).
